On March 19, 2005, five youths from the 4-H Teen Leadership Development Institute (TLDI) at Compton High School led a group of approximately one hundred and marched for Diabetes Awareness in their community. Joining them in the march was City of Compton's Mayor Eric J. Perrodin, Compton High School students, teachers, counselors, parents and residents of the City of Compton. As they marched, they voiced awareness of diabetes in both English and Spanish, using dozens of picket signs. Moreover, marchers were wearing Diabetes Awareness t-shirts, specifically designed by the youth. The crowd walked two miles, monitored by the Compton Police Department. The walk ended at the school gymnasium where the youth drew the crowd to the a diabetes education exhibition they had organized for the community.
Exhibition guests included Compton Councilwoman Lillie Dobson and two representatives from the Compton Fire Department. Free blood pressure checks and blood sugar tests were conducted by the Hubert H. Humphrey Health Care Center.
Ralph's and Superior Super Warehouse provided beverages and gift certificates.
