Carmelitos community gardenA decade ago, Carlos Jackson, Executive Director of the Community Development Commission (CDC), envisioned turning a seven-acre vacant lot into a garden for public housing residents at Carmelitos Housing Development in Long Beach. Working with staff of CDC and the University of California Cooperative Extension, Landscape Architect Achva Benzinberg Stein conceptualized and designed the "Growing Experience" garden, which includes a community garden, orchard, greenhouse, nursery, amphitheater, and training center.
