Nutrition, Family and Consumer Science

To improve the diet and nutrition knowledge of youth, Cooperative Extension provides teachers, program leaders and other extenders with free nutrition education curriculum to implement in the classroom.
UC Cooperative Extension offers the following PROGRAMS:
LA County Master Food Preserver Program
The revival of this program is the result of a renewed interest in home food preservation in LA County. Our UC-certified Master Food Preservers train individuals how to can, pressure can, freeze, dry and ferment. Once trained, individuals pass on the knowledge to the general public.
Adult Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP)
Objective: To assist limited resource families and youth in acquiring the knowledge, skills, attitude and behavioral changes necessary to improve their diets through good nutrition. The Healthy Families Eating Smart and Being Active curriculum is used to help families become self-sufficient in making wise, healthful decisions and being physically active at levels that are comfortable.
UC-CalFresh Nutrition Education Program (formerly UC-FSNEP)
Objective: To improve the nutrition-related skills of Food Stamp eligible participants, specifically skills related to selecting, purchasing and preparing a low-cost, nutritious diet for them and their families. The Eating Right is Basic curriculum provides nutrition education to help participants make healthful food choices within a limited budget as well as engage in active lifestyles consistent with the current Dietary Guidelines for Americans.
Youth Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (Youth EFNEP)
The successes of EFNEP and FSNEP have inspired staff to create a nutrition education program for youth and teachers in learning environments. The program targets low-income youth and addresses the nutritional needs of youth who are from families that receive or have applied for food stamps. All nutrition education curricula provided have been tested, reviewed and approved by educators.
Fresh from the Garden
Emphasizing the health benefits of a vegetable-rich diet, the program offers healthful cooking demonstrations, targeting community and home gardeners, teachers and parents associated with school gardens, and interested neighborhood and community organizations.
