
Through the Adult Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP), trained nutrition education assistants (NEAs) deliver eight weeks of free nutrition classes to families wtih limited resources. Educators use the research-based curriculum, "Eat Smart and Be Active" to teach participants the main messages of the 2005 Dietary Guidelines and MyPyramid.
EFNEP participants learn the importance of physical activity; planning and shopping for healthy meals within their budgets; choosing a healthy diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, low-fat and lean proteins; and limiting fat, sugar and salt in their diets. Over the course of eight weeks, participants receive exciting incentives (including measuring cups, measuring spoons, exercise stretch bands, water bottles, meat thermometers and recipe books.
