Mulches
Barriers to sun's reaching soil surface (if not decomposed, add nitrogen so doesn't steal from soil, plants)
- Buffer soil temperature
- Prevent weeds
- Conserve water in soil

Types of Mulches
- Steer manure
       - prime attribute is that it adds tilth
       - adds only 1-2% fertilizer (N)
- Peat moss
- Bark
       - fine
       - large
- Compost
- Potting soil
- Nitrohumus (sewage sludge) - contains higher levels of lead and cadmium

Other amendments
PH of 6.0 is ideal for mineral absorption

- Wood ashes (good potassium), raises pH (alkaline)
- Organic matter - lowers pH (acid)
- Gypsum - used to replace sodium and turn into calcium, then leach
- Zinc v. Iron deficiency (both have interveinal symptoms - veins stay green but,
- Zinc - yellow leaf
- Iron - white leaf
